The inspiration for the Foundation’s logo is the blue lotus flower. In mythology, the lotus flower was one of the first plants to come into existence, emerging from the primordial mud before the dawn of creation.  In ancient Egypt, the blue lotus flower, highly prized for its fragrance and beauty, came to symbolise the regenerative power of the sun, creation, life, death, rebirth, healing, cleansing and enlightenment.

The flower was a potent symbol, used extensively in Egyptian art. The way that the lotus flower arose, floated on the water, shut at night, disappeared every day and re-opened in the morning symbolised the sun’s journey, and the journey of death and rebirth, a central theme in ancient Egyptian philosophy.

One of the more meaningful aspects of the lotus flower was that it was rooted in soil deep beneath the water, struggled to grow out of that soil, and then rose above the water to greet the sun. Lesley and David believe in the transformative and regenerative power of art and literature and think that the symbolism of the blue lotus flower is apt because it embodies all the elements of the creative process. It also appeals to them because it references and pays homage to their parents’ origins and heritage.
